It’s a Whodunnit on the Moors –

Golden Eagles Bumped Off by...

Golden eagles are one of the enduring symbols of the Scottish Highlands and they make a fine sight wheeling overhead through your binoculars. You won’t get much closer than that. Although last year we diverted to Rocamadour in the Lot Department in France because we had heard it was spectacular and there was a place called Rocher des Aigles, the rock of eagles. That I had to see. And blow me down  as we walked round a tower above the canyon four eagles launched themselves out of the tower just feet from our heads. I even got off a snap of them. These raptors are the top of the predator tree and that is the problem in Scotland.

Mystery Deaths of Apex Predators

Despite widespread police searches some eight satellite-tagged golden eagles have gone missing from the Highland range called the Monadhliath mountains in less than five years. All the transmitters used for tracking the birds have been deliberately destroyed. It is near Inverness and it is a special reserve for these birds of prey. No transmitters have been found and the obvious  conclusion is that the birds have been murdered. As you know I am a fan of the Highlands and understand that the grouse moors are incredibly important to the local economy, but killing of these apex predators is beyond the pale. Culling birds and the associated tourist activity in favour of grouse shooting seems to be happening. And of course this is in serious breach of the law.

Raptor Persecution

RSPB Scotland is on the record saying. “The overwhelming majority of satellite-tagged birds of prey that have disappeared in Scotland have been in areas intensively managed for gamebird shooting and in areas that have an appalling record of confirmed incidents of raptor persecution. “
