Is Rab C Nesbitt Hanging up the String Vest -
Glasgow’s Street Philosopher Has Had a Vest Full
After a long running success with the character, first seen on our screens in 1988, Gregor Fisher is waving the white flag or at least the grimy grey vest. After 10 series he has indicated that the character may have run his course. Speculation has been rife that after the success of the comedy Still Game the greater British public would relish a fresh batch of Rab C Nesbitt’s chaotic life. But Gregor Fisher has poured cold water on the speculation saying he is having a marvellous time renovating houses in France.
Still Game
Rab last appeared on the small screens in 2014 in a Christmas special in which in order to make ends meet he turned to a life of crime. But the real crime is for the character to disappear forever amid the many changes that have overtaken Glasgow. Gregor says he barely recognises Scotland’s second city these days and feels somewhat disorientated by the new Glasgow and somewhat left out of the “vibe”. Oh that word says it all for me. I’m not sure I want to live anywhere with a “vibe!”
A Universal Character
Gregor feels that the character became too much of a stereotype for Glasgow and its inhabitants, both shorthand and lazy. Rab C Nesbitt is a universal figure he muses, a type that can be found in any major city in the world. Rab is a forgotten man who exists in an underbelly of society, hence perhaps having so much of his belly on show. He says, “Rab is a universal character.” But the strength of his character acting, by the way Gregor graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama , has put people off addressing him in the street. He said, “I don’t get a lot of hassle in Glasgow. I think it’s to do with me having played Rab. Some of his aura of slight menace might have rubbed off making people think ‘I’d better not, he might give me a Glasgow kiss!’ ”
Panto Season
Mr Fisher is back in Glasgow in the pantomime Cinderella at the Kings Theatre playing one of the Ugly Sisters along with his man Tony Roper from Rab C Nesbitt and I bet it’ll be a blockbuster. I’ll be checking for tickets as soon as I’ve finished this blog because you can see it for little more than a tenner, that’s value I’d say. And what else is value, well there is always a sales pitch, c’mon you know that, is the gorgeous china on offer from James Pirie? We won’t make a mug out of you, but we will sell you one.
