No Fakes Here –

Genuine Brands – Genuine Quality

Over the last three years more than £13 million of fake goods have been seized and 100 arrests made on a crackdown on the Glasgow Barras.

Fakes  Damage Business

The Scottish Anti Illicit Trade Group said the cost to the UK economy of counterfeit goods in lost taxes and profits was £1.3billion.  And this load of recovered stuff, it doesn’t deserve another name, as it was counterfeit clothing, shoes, bags, electronics, jewellery and tobacco despite all being labelled as real designer gear and it was netted by the police and Trading Standards officers during Operation Salang.

Salang Thanks For All The Designer Knock-Offs
The crackdown operation saw a number of stalls being shut down and several people are in prison or awaiting trial. The authorities are keen to encourage new blood in the Barras and they’ve earmarked five million quid to help get it done. Now if you buy a knock off you may think that you are getting a bargain or that no-one was harmed in the crime, but it bleeds honest business dry and the funds often go to organised crime.

The regeneration project is such that there are six new buildings being used inside the Barras giving opportunities to artists for studios and to young people.

Links to Organised Crime

In the past the Barras was the major hotspot for fake goods in Scotland, but  police and the council have pulled together to make the area a viable place to run a legitimate business. The raids included seizing goods at the Barras and in locations where they were produced or stored before being sold at the market. They also seized equipment like as CD burners used to produce fake goods.  Fakes only harm the economy and make it too easy for consumers to get used to shoddy goods.

Fake Goods Can Harm Your Health

The raids covered the Barras, the wider city area and the north of England. New products increasingly being counterfeited are smart phone, phone chargers and e-cigarette chargers which, all of which pose a very serious fire risk. As a result of buying these fake electrical goods there have been fires in both cars and homes.
