Scotland’s Food and Drink Exports Grow by More than 10 Per Cent -

As I Get Waylaid by Indian Runner Ducks at Highland Show

I started off with an uplifting story of the exceptional increase in Scottish food exports, including our national drink, but in the way of it all I got sidetracked by the Quack Commandos at the Royal Highland Show. I wanted to tell you about the export of food and drink worth £1.2 billion in the first three months of 2017, up by £124 million that’s 11 per cent on the same period in 2016 and the cracking national success story that that is. But then came the sheep dogs, the ducks and the starving Scottish freshwater crocodiles.  The Quack Commandos have very little to do with the export of Scotch whisky and salmon, but they kind of speak volumes for Scottish ingenuity and a native wit that makes it a lively place to live.

Native Wit

Now if I was bragging a little I would point to Scotch whisky and Scottish salmon topping the UK export chart in the first quarter of 2017. Together they comprised 22 per cent of the value of total food and drink exports from the UK. That’s pretty staggering I think, but then I get back to thinking of ducks and sheepdogs from the Trossachs. It seems the ducks are Indian Runner ducks and the dogs are Border Collies and they have to navigate an obstacle course named after famous Scottish football teams, including a bridge over the aforesaid starving freshwater crocodiles, are they plastic I’m wondering? Now the funniest part is when they take away the Border Collies and allow mere humans, kiddies and adults, to try and shepherd the ducks around the obstacle course. This is so funny it would make a freshwater crocodile cry. The result is mayhem. But of course I should remember to tell you that fish and seafood was the largest food sector, up by some £48.3 million which is a whopping 30.8 per cent increase, but I will get sidetracked by the thought of runner ducks.

Herding Cats?

Now if you don’t want to get waylaid by random sheepdogs, roaming ducks and Scottish freshwater crocodiles then I can recommend a browse on our crocodile free site. And of course this is the time of year for many celebrations as we are deep into the wedding season as well as the start of the academic results and the need for well done gifts of all sorts. Don’t worry there is a special Occasions area designed to take the stress out of shopping and allow you more time to get on with life and allow us to take up the strain. Oh and if you get the chance take a gander at the Quack Commandos.
