Sheep Rustling on the Rise

Police Warn Farmers to be Alert

The police in Moffat issued a warning to all farmers as a huge flock of  some 450 sheep were rustled from a local farm.  The flock was valued in excess of £60,000 and will be a near mortal blow for the farm near Grey Mares in Dumfries & Galloway. Many of the ewes were in lamb at the time of the theft.

Thieves on the Lamb

The police warned that organised criminals were increasingly targeting farmers as they are all so busy looking after their farms and livestock. The remote countryside locations might well have helped the criminals as a large number of specialist vehicles must have been used in the heist.

Be Vigilant

NFU Scotland have asked the public to be more vigilant in the fight against rustling with remote hill farms most at risk. In previous years the cost of rustling has been more than a quarter of a million pounds and sometimes thieves have butchered animals on the spot for instant sales. It is a worrying trend for Scotland’s beleaguered sheep farmers.
