Famous Fivers – Two Now Found

Two to Go

The four micro-engraved fivers that have been released into the UK cash system by artist Graham Short are starting to be found. Mr Short engraved a 5 mm portrait of the writer Jane Austen 5mm on the transparent part of the new plastic Bank of England £5 notes to mark the 200th anniversary of her death. The latest note has been found in a Christmas card in the Scottish Borders, the first was found in a cafe in south Wales.  Each is valued at some £50,000. This news means that only two are left to be found by some lucky person.

Lucky Finds in the Borders and Wales

If you do find one you are urged to contact Tony Huggins- Haig at the Haig Gallery in Kelso which launched the project. Mr Huggins is the mastermind behind this drive to popularise the arts and he reported that both of the finders wanted to hang onto the fivers and not put them up for auction. Mr Huggins- Haig’s advice is to keep checking your change as there are still two of the little beauties out there. Graham Short’s  portrait of the Queen on a pinhead, sold for £100,000. Huggins-Haig said the engraved notes could be worth tens of thousands of pounds at auction. Artist Short spent the first note on a sausage and egg sandwich at Square cafe in Blackwood, Caerphilly in December and the engraved note was discovered a week later.
