That’s Just Dandie –

Rare Scottish Dog Breed Under Threat

The Dandie Dinmont terrier breed is one of the rarest in Scotland and its low numbers have seen a plan put in place to save Scotland’s rarest pedigree dog breed.  Last year just 17 of these puppies were registered in Scotland by the Kennel Club.  Named after a character in a Sir Walter Scott novel  Guy Mannering the Dandie Dinmont originates in the Borders.

On the Decline

The Dandie Dinmont is one of a posse of Scottish breeds that are on the decline in their native country. The native breeds that are classed as vulnerable are Skye terriers,  Scottish deerhounds, the Gordon setter. The most famous Skye terrier of course was “Greyfriars Bobby” who has his own monument in the capital.

Old Ginger

Such is the concern that the breed might die out in the near future the Kennel Club Educational Trust agreed a grant of £20,000 towards the creation of a new Dandie Dinmont discovery centre in Selkirk and a bronze statue at The Haining in Selkirk. The idea is to publicise the attractions of these charming dogs to a much wider audience and save the breed and tell the story of 9 other breeds that have their origins in the Dandie Dimont whose original sire, Old Ginger, was born in the Haining in 1842. The Queen’s sculptor for Scotland Alexander Stoddart has been commissioned to produce a bronze statue of Old Ginger, which will be unveiled on June 4, 2017, his 175th birthday.
