Mothers’ Day March 26

Well it is in the UK Anyway

It seems  I am afraid to go on the computer these days because some bright spark will have done something new and cute and it’ll make me feel old, I’m not really, and I’ll have go and have a lie down. The latest is a FaceBook emoticon for Mother’s Day. Now I’ll get points for knowing and occasionally using and an emoticon ;-) but really it seems if you have to send your mum a daft little symbol, then it is just as I said - daft. If you have a mum then it is a time to show appreciation and love to remember the good times and look forward to the next visit  together.

Linked to Easter in UK

In Scotland the date changes every year, because it is linked in with Easter,  it is always three weeks before Easter Sunday, which means as I said that this year Mother’s Day will be on Sunday March 26. Elsewhere around the world – in the US and Europe – the date is always the second Sunday in May. Which in 2017 is Sunday is May 14.

A Tradition Revived and Re-energised

But it wasn’t originally about mums at all back hundreds of years ago Mothering Sunday was a chance for those who worked in service to go back home see their families and attend their ‘mother church’. This was revived in the early part of last century by Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and now it is an essential part of the fabric of the year. I say essential, because it isn’t just a handy peg for retailers to hang their hat on and sell you stuff, it is a genuine chance to say thank you to the one person in your life and quite often your partner too, for the fine things that they have brought into your life, by carrying that life.

Remember to Say Thanks

Remember to celebrate it in 2017. Flowers and thoughtfulness go a long way and you are already on her favourite’s list, so make sure you stay there! So this year get a head start on thoughts for Mother’s Day,  by going and browsing through our lovely selection of gifts and hopefully you’ll find something enduring.  I’m sure you will.
