The Milkman Always Rings Twice-

Second Time Around for the Milk Bottle on the Doorstep

Regular readers of this blog will remember that an older friend of the missus had a mum who once dated film legend Sean Connery when he was a humble milkman in the capital. When he got offered fame and fortune in the Great Wen of the south, AKA London, she decided it was too risky and married someone working in a bank instead. What might have been, ah well! But we attended her funeral late last autumn and she had a lovely happily fulfilled life. And now I hear the Scottish milkman is making a comeback. Consumers, that’s you and me by the way, who are concerned about the environment are fuelling a revival of the milkman with deliveries in glass bottles soaring in the past two years. It’s because it has dawned on many of us that plastic is not the friend we thought but glass is. Dairy farmers say that the BBC film Blue Planet and other TV shows highlighting pollution have turned the public against plastic, leading to a surge in demand for a traditional glass bottle delivered to the door.

Back in Time for Breakfast

Back in the 1990s the traditional early morning milk rounds almost died out. We were all getting our milk from the supermarkets and it came in nasty single-use plastic bottles rather than lovely reusable glass. But the ghost of Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West is having the last laugh as one dairy in Glasgow, has doubled its delivery workforce in the past couple of years. Now they are delivering 170,000 bottles a week, compared with 30,000 two years ago. It is a growth employer too! Currently they have 150 milk drivers across Scotland but they are in the process of hiring 30 more milkmen this year, although many of them will be women too I guess. There are still some deliveries in plastic bottles but the good old glass ones are surging back into our lives as Scotland’s largest independent milk producer, has enjoyed a 25 per cent increase in customer inquiries each week since it started using glass bottles in May last year.

Glass Is Best

Now here at James Pirie we don’t need any persuading that glass is best and a fine and durable material too, one of the greatest inventions in the history of the world in fact. It has so many good features around practicality and ease of cleansing that we sometimes might forget how marvellous it is. But if you need any reasons to choose the best why not look at our five star customer rated Royal Scot Crystal - Edinburgh - 4 Crystal Small Whisky Tumblers in a great presentation box. It’s also half price. One happy customer said:” It is difficult to find quality cut glasses in the shops today. These are small but beautiful and arrived quickly and very well packed. Great service.” That speak volumes I say.
