If you ever wonder what a contribution the Scotch whisky industry makes to the economic health of the nation then wonder no more. Scotch whisky contributed 21% to the value of all UK food and drink exports. Scotch exports were worth £4.7bn and the industry supports 42,000 jobs, including 10,500 directly employed in Scotland and 7,000 in rural areas. And the excise duty receipts on the alcohol accounted for £3.8bn.The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has calculated that each employee in the whisky industry generates £210,505 of activity nearly £40,000 per person more valuable than employees in the energy sector. The research found whisky to be worth a total of £5.5bn to the UK economy and between2016 and 2018, the value of the whisky industry increased by 10%. That’s a pretty good rate when we hear that Scotch has fallen behind gin in the fashion stakes.

Game of Thrones and a Dram or Two

Well I am pleased to have done my bit to keep the industry healthy and I can tell you when I watched the third episode of the last series of Game of Thrones I needed a dram. I won’t make any spoilers for those of you who don’t want or have a Sky subscription, but it was a grueller. I think I had two big glasses and a cup of tea before the end of the programme. It was also filmed in what was basically the dark, so sometimes I was quite pleased not to be able to see the goriest details. And between you and me I think the Night King was probably a bourbon whiskey drinker, swigging down Jack and cokes, stylish but basically horrible. And as we know the night is dark and full of terrors.
