Giant Pandas May Have Noisy Neighbours Soon
As you probably know Giant Pandas are amongst the most beautiful and evocative animals in the world, symbols of the World wildlife Fund and the most annoying to look after. They seem programmed for difficulty. They eat only one thing, bamboo, and they have the mating urge of a near dead donkey. The female is attracted to males only once a year and the rest of the time she prefers her own company and yet more bamboo to munch. That being said they are the most amazing animals to look at and we humans haven’t done a grand job at all on looking after their habitat. So picky eaters they may be, but we people have created most of the problems they endure. And now the good builders of the capital are about to give them a whole host of new distractions from the obvious chore of making new pandas.
New for Old
Yes there is a plan afoot to build a number of new apartments at Corstorphine Hospital within hearing distance of the panda enclosures. So the zoo is building a new home for Tian Tian and Yang Guang to keep them away from their future noisy neighbours. It is deemed that the pandas are of national importance and as such the builders have to give extreme notice of building plans. Pandas it seems are particularly vulnerable in terms of negative health impacts to noise and vibration during demolition and construction works. Edinburgh Zoo has raised concerns for the pandas' well-being. So they have started work on a new giant panda habitat at an alternative location at the zoo at what is currently designated ‘African Plains.’ The pandas get the first look at with the disturbance, but the zoo is planning other measures to protect any animals equally adversely affected by the noise and bother of the building work. Building has started on the new habitat for Tian Tian and Yang Guang, but for the moment you can still catch them at the old enclosure.
