With the Turn of the Decade
Well the decade has changed and so has the way we shop. But some things never seem to change, Great Scot Andy Murray is out of the Australian Open with a dicky hip and the weather has been grim. But the story of a brother and sister’s 700 mile runaway journey to North Tolsta on the Isle of Lewis caught my eye. It was a doc on the Beeb on New Year’s Eve, but you’ll be able to catch it on the BBC Iplayer no doubt. In 1949 thirteen-year-old Millie Richardson convinced her nine year old brother to travel on the sly to the isle. Millie was a bored tomboy living in Hitchin in Hertfordshire who thought her granny’s place at North Tolsta was a children’s paradise where she enjoyed spending her summer holidays.
Lewis a Children’s Paradise
They stole off in the middle of the night with only a few pennies and some stale buns and swimming costumes for the beach, but they had a plan and it worked like clockwork. They knew train times even though they didn’t have tickets they mingled with the crowds at the station and by feigning sleep or hiding in the toilets they avoided the ticket inspectors on the night train to Inverness - a 10-hour journey. Then from Kyle of Lochalsh on the West Highland coast they planned to take a ferry to Stornoway on Lewis. They successfully stowed away on the ferry and made the final sixteen mile leg of the trip courtesy of a stranger who gave them the bus fare. The children had caused mayhem, worried the life out of their parents, and made the national papers with their escapade, but their grandmother was hugely relieved to see them. It seems had a big Cheshire cat smile and everything was forgiven. A telegram to the parents saw the kiddies making national news headlines.
