Burns Suppers Notes –
January 25th Celebrates Nation’s Favourite
When Robert Burns died in 1796 the loss was so great that after a few years his friends would gather for a commemorative supper on his birthday and so one of the longest lasting traditions of the nation began. I’ve been casting around locally for a Burns Supper, because as long time readers will know we haven’t been in the current house for very long and the area is new to me. And along with the menu of potential venues I’ve been reading things like vegetarian option available. This got me into a lather, for a few moments at least, you see as a diehard I always want the great chieftain of the pudding race at the centre of the meal.
Everything Changes- Everything Stays the Same
But then I thought this is the 21st century and the army is in the news for changing its approach to recruitment, so why not look at a broadening of the palate. So I went to the BBC at had a look there at recipes for a traditional but still bolder Burns Night Supper. So I’ve decided on a starter of Cullen skink that classic Scottish smoked fish soup with velvety leeks and potato, oh yum. Then of course haggis, neeps, tatties and a whisky sauce. Followed by Clootie pudding - oh that rich fruit pudding is a classic, with a dab of clotted cream and a dram of whisky. Well maybe more than one dram and a taxi home. All I have to do now is to find a local Burns Supper that meets with this exacting set of demands. I’m starting the research now.
