Glasgow Bus Lane Bonanza

You might be forgiven for thinking that some corporation road schemes are nothing more than income generators for cash strapped local councils. In Glasgow in 2017 the Nelson Mandela bus gate caught out 22,317 drivers generating £1.3m in revenue. Now it seems to me that that is a scandal. There aren’t 22,000 bad drivers in the second city. And now the greedy council has apologised after a bus lane camera kept churning out hundreds of fines for motorists diverted for a Hollywood movie. They got fined for following the road signs. Jings, that’s criminal! Roads officials suspended the restriction on the Mandela Bus Gate so other streets could be shut off while a Hollywood movie was being filmed with Idris Alba. Meaning motorists could use the restricted lane. Except there were not allowed to!

Christmas is Coming - There’s a PCN on the Mat

It has now emerged the camera remained operational. And now 817 penalty charge notices have been issued to unsuspecting drivers. Each charge is £60 fine which can rise to £90 if it goes unpaid after a month. So far only one motorist has just had his fine ripped up by the council after he submitted an appeal. It is hoped the other 816 folk didn’t just cough up. The council shut off a series of streets around George Square between 23 and 29 October to allow 200 film crew and actors to shoot scenes for the film, which is part of the Fast and Furious series. Glasgow was standing in for the city of brotherly love Philadelphia, now that is funny.
