Are Scot Rail Scrooges? –
Another Blow to Family Incomes with Infinite Fare Hike
Oh dear it’s that time of year when the rail rises are announced and this year just in time for Christmas the scrooges at Scot Rail have announced the end of free child fares when an adult travels with them. The rail company declared that from January the Kids Go Free option, allowing an adult to take up to two children on a return journey for free, would end. The new scheme is one called kids for a quid. But I don’t know about inflation hitting new highs, but my maths tells me that an increase from zero to something no matter how small is infinite. That’s a blow! So from the first of January mums travelling with kids will have to find extra at time when even comfortable household incomes are feeling stressed. An adult travelling once a week with two children would face an extra annual bill of £104.
Kids Don’t Go Free
To soften the blow kids go free will include free child entry to Scottish attractions such as Edinburgh Zoo and Deep Sea World. I’m not sure when and where you’ll be allowed to go because for the moment a ticket for a child is about a tenner. I can’t see Edinburgh Zoo wanting to give a way too many free entries, because that’s infinite too. From a tenner to free is a big drop maybe too big to get. And a time of environmental concern the kids go free scheme encouraged families to travel by train and leave the car at home, if they have one. It would be true to say the scheme was a monster hit across the board, but not with the rail provider who are probably busy cooking up delays to keep their poor passengers on their toes, after another year of woeful punctuality and cancellations. The only good point is Scottish rail price increases are lower than the rest of the UK.
