Staggis not Haggis Shock
Staggis not Haggis Shock
As Burns Night Approaches Slurs Made Against National Dish
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o' a grace
As lang's my arm.
Is Haggis a Foreign Dish?
Just as the good ole USA is thinking about allowing in the Haggis after decades of a banning it we are told the chieftain of the pudding race isn’t even Scottish. Well I might need a lie down, what with the Burns Supper coming up soon. A prize winning master butcher from Argyll and Bute says that it was the Vikings who invented Haggis and not the Scots. And he thinks it ought to be made out of venison and not sheep and therefore Staggis is a better term.
Sheep or Deer?
Now the Haggis that the great Robert Burns addressed was made from a sheep’s stomach with sheep’s liver, lungs heart, suet, oatmeal and a bunch of seasoning and this is what we traditionally eat and what the Americans traditionally ban. Which means the world is how we expect it to be. But research shows us it seems that the first time anyone wrote about Haggis was in Lancashire in 1430, not in Scotland, although I note it is made from sheep not venison in the book LiberCure Cocorum.
Seize the Dram
Now I’ve written about tartan and the pipes before as the history of all things Scottish unravels as ‘experts’ revisit the past, but I am not having Haggis as not being Scottish enough. So this Burns Night enjoy the fair, fat, honest and sonsie face of Scotland’s national dish and ignore the naysayers.
