The Scottish Thistle is most definitely the oldest 'National Flower' and is probably one of the most famous, and most easily recognized symbols of Scotland and all things Scottish, along with tartan. It has been the symbol of the brave folk north of the border since around about the 13th century when Norway ruled part of the country. One legend has it that Norse king, Haakon, invaded Largs, where my dentist comes from, one of northern Scotland's coastal towns. Coming ashore they intended a sneak attack on the good folk of Largs, but their plan involved creeping up in bare feet and slaughtering the Scottish Clansmen while they slept.

But like the geese of Ancient Rome, the thistle led to more noise as the tough guy Vikings in their bare feet betrayed their presence with a lot of ouches! The good folk of Largs were alerted to the invaders and gave them a good seeing to, before sending them on their way.  This led to the thistle being the emblem of the nation. A martial symbol emblematic of the tough no nonsense character of the Scots. O flower of Scotland

This regal proud plant, please don’t call it a weed, grows to a height of five feet and has no natural enemies because of the vicious spines that cover and protect it like a hedgehog. It is widespread throughout the nation. A.A. Milne’s character Eeyore ate only thistles, but fortunately he didn’t live in the Highlands, not even in one of the Disney adaptations, so he couldn’t be bothered by midges. .

Hugh MacDiarmid, published A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle in 1926 and this is one of the most famous works by a Scottish poet. Now we don’t recommend that you get drunk in order to look at our new Thistle designs, but they will add extra pleasure to the enjoyment of your favourite tipple.
