Did Someone Say Chocolate Haggis?
You can always tell when we are approaching Burns Night as the airwaves and newspapers are awash with haggis stories. At the moment you can get tinned haggis, vegetarian haggis, deep-fried haggis, battered deep fried haggis, haggis bon bons, vegetarian haggis, haggis burger, haggis Moroccan style, Haggis pakora, haggis lasagne and deep-fried haggis balls as featured by the TV's Hairy Bikers. The only place you can’t get even an ordinary haggis is the United States of America which has a long standing ban on the import of the national dish. But who would expect to get chocolate haggis, not me! A well known Scottish butcher has launched a ‘limited edition’ of the tasty dessert ahead of Burns Night celebrations later this month. And it may well be stocked in your local supermarket. The haggis is a chocolate brownie pudding stuffed with white chocolate chips which you can have as a hot dessert with ice cream or cream. It’s even suitable for vegetarians, vegans miss out. But I suppose they will be able to export it to the USA!
And in case that hasn’t tickled your taste buds enough there is the story of the ten year old girl from Edinburgh who wrote to a major Scottish potato crisp manufacturer to get her favourite kind of Haggis and Black Pepper crisps all year round rather than just as a seasonal item. The canny manufacturer sensing a marketing opportunity gave the girl a year’s supply of the tasty snacks and she’s a viral sensation after a photo-shoot at her home in the capital. She says though that she doesn’t like real haggis, only haggis flavoured potato chips.
With Robert Burn’s words in front of me:
"Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race..."
I wonder what the national bard would say about the perhaps frivolous proliferation of haggis themed foods.
But I don’t often wonder what he would say about our 2024 offering, I hope he would mostly like it.
