New Scottish Drama Hits Our TV Screens
Granite City is a new TV drama set in… yes, you guessed it Aberdeen. It features a fairly odd couple pairing, though nothing as strange as Turner and Hooch, the star of which was, sort of Tom Hanks, but really it was Beasley a burly, brown-nosed Dogues de Bordeaux that carried the world’s reserves of saliva in his mouth. In the same way in this series the actors shine, but it is the Granite City that is the star in this fairly lavish murder mystery production. Although we have to hope that the homicide rate never gets as high as in the evergreen Midsomer Murders series, where cemetery space must be at a premium.
The Great Scottish Breakfast- Beware
The odd couple pairing here is smartly dressed DCI Lara Bartlett (Hannah Donaldson) and rookie detective Davis Lindo (Romario Simpson) who is something of an even snazzier dresser, so the detectives look as if they wouldn’t get down and dirty to solve the crime, unlike Rankin’s Inspector Rebus who revels in his lack of charm and general scruffiness. The favourite scene of mine in the drama to date is when the rookie detective is given the Full Monty Scots breakfast of champions that contains every fried bit of a fish or animal in the nation. It has kippers, white pudding, black pudding and all the usual fried suspects in the totemic national cooked breakfast, as loved in cardiac units all over Scotland. If you watch the show I suggest you do it after a meal to lessen any natural hankerings you may have for a fry up, or stock up on the statins to curb your cholesterol.
