Bridgerton Glasses and When Eloping Meant a Trip to Gretna Green
Do you feel your heritage is under threat in our current globalised world where the people deciding what you see on your computer or phone screen are based in some bunker in California? Well there’s a group of people called The Living Heritage Inventory for Scotland which wants the fruits of the nation preserved so that future generations can enjoy them too. It’s all part of the commitment to the UNESCO convention on the subject, dating back to 2003.Anyone can nominate a custom or practice and some committee or other will decide if it should be added to the Inventory. So how about the custom of being married over an anvil?
And with St Valentine’s Day on the horizon then perhaps we should consider when Scottish law allowed for ‘irregular marriages.’ If you remember Outlander the hit TV show telling the love story of Jamie Fraser and Claire, well their daughter Brianna was informally married to the academic Roger Wakefield in a ceremony called ‘hand fast.’ This was when most people with standing in Scotland had the authority to conduct a marriage ceremony, as long as there were two witnesses present. This is the origin of the Gretna Green story when for around 200 years eloping couples from England who were escaping parental disapproval could be married over the blacksmiths anvil. Once the hammer went down on the anvil the happy couple were man and wife.
You can still see the anvil and hammer in Gretna, but marriage has been rather more regularised of late, which takes some of the romance out of it, but fear not because James Pirie has some fab St Valentine’s gifts for the woman or man in your life to put it back in again.
